Fortnite Battle Royale is fast becoming THE third-person shooter game to play. It’s already the stuff of social media memes. People have started cosplaying the characters and referencing their icons ever since it came out. The characters and stories themselves are dissected and then revered or dissed in forums and social media pages dedicated to the game.
Players are genuinely obsessed with it, and with good reason. It’s smartly and playfully designed but easy enough to play even for beginners.
If you are a Fortnite Battle Royale beginner, don’t fret. This post is here to guide you every step of the way. The long-term mission is, of course, survival. Each decision you make will contribute to this big picture, whether it’s something seemingly trivial as deciding where to land, or something as game-changing as choosing a weapon. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun along the way, because you definitely can! So read on and learn five practical tips for this wildly popular game if you want to get on board right now.
Always Be Vigilant
Right at the beginning (when you are still on the Battle Bus) you’re going to have to start planning most of your Fortnite Battle Royale methods. After all, you are going into battle like a soldier. Aside from your end game, you will need to map out where and when to land, what to build, when to go into stealth mode, where to gather rewards, and yes, when to shoot others. So the first lesson you will learn has to be about vigilance – constant vigilance.
If you feel like you aren’t ready yet to jump into battle, observe someone who’s been playing the game for some time. They can give you tips and advice about survival and other tactics long enough to see how most of the narratives play out. We did this at the start, and by sheer observation of victories and defeats by other players, we managed to create our own game plan.
Choose Your Landing Spots Well
Now here’s where it really starts to become interesting. Your virtual survival instincts should start kicking in right when you have to choose where to make your drop. If you’re adventurous and daring, go ahead and land where there are plenty of weapons and loot to be had. But if you’re like us who prefer to be cautious about these things, it’s best to land in the periphery of a named location nearing the end of the Battle Bus’s route. These landing spots might not be teeming with loot and weapons, but it will give you a fighting chance to work stealthily towards the named location without encountering too many competitors.
If you don’t mind sharing a landing spot with several other players, by all means, choose to land on a named location along the path of the Battle Bus. Landing somewhere in the middle of the map would expectedly be more action-packed than landing in its peripheries, but you can easily arm yourself with available weapons and healing/building tools once you’re there.
Take Advantage of Loot Chests
Loot chests aren’t hard to come by because they appear in fixed locations (but not necessarily in fixed times). Keep your eyes open for glowing chests especially the golden ones. Keep your ears open, as well – a metallic chime will indicate that you’re near one. These are usually hidden behind walls, under floors, and in attics. To get to a golden loot chest, you’re going to have to use an ax to get through floors and walls, or build a ramp leading to the chest but not directly under it (it will disappear if you end up destroying the surface it is standing on).
The best kinds of loot chests yield the stuff you will need the most. These include healing items and shield items, as well as weapons and building tools. Weapons have different rarities which can be determined by color: gold, orange, purple, blue, green, or grey, with gold being the rarest and most powerful. All weapons and ammo glow from a distance so you can easily see if it’s something you need or will be worth your while to retrieve.
Keep Building Defenses
You will need to protect yourself in this game, and one of the most effective means to do that would be to build up defenses. Fortification will help prevent you from getting shot, after all. These buildings can also help you plan out surprise attacks and provide quick getaways for when you need to hide from attacks quickly.
What you can build are walls, roofs, stairs, and floors. You can also make traps, but those can be obtained as loot when you win a match. You can structure and experiment with these building types any way you want using a variety of materials to suit your needs and situation: wood, stone, or metal. As with other tools and weapons, these materials have different build times and health levels. Knowing these will help you decide if you want to use the stronger materials first, or go for the most basic one so you can build a structure quickly enough to protect you from getting shot.
Know What, When, and How to Avoid
Our most important Fortnite Battle Royale beginners’ tip would be to avoid getting shot. Well, duh, right?
But as fundamental a goal as it may seem in online games like these, having the foresight of who, when, where, and what to avoid plays a significant role in survival (as well as racking up kills). Knowing how to be stealthy is almost as important as mastering the right skills for combat and handling a variety of weapons. Decide which locations give you the best vantage points for taking down other players, and which structures can provide a place for you to hide should the situation call for it.
Fortnite Battle Royale is undoubtedly a fun, creative way to help you become a better decision-maker armed with multiple tools and skills. These tips may all sound like an anxiety-inducing endeavor where you will always be on your toes. But there will be enjoyable moments – especially once you rack up your victories and achievements. Sure, you have to be on your guard almost all the time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with all that Fortnite Battle Royale has to offer to players (and believe us, there are a lot of those moments!).
